‘The importance of internal and third-party auditing for the Hospitality Industry’
Highfield will host a live webinar panel discussion on ‘The importance of internal and third-party auditing for the Hospitality Industry’ on Thursday 15 June 2023 as part of Highfield’s monthly Improving Food Safety webinar series.
Our specially selected panel of speakers includes: Jo Betts (Principal Environmental Health Officer at South Derbyshire District Council), Dr Lisa Ackerley (Director of Public Health and Hygiene Engagement at Reckitt), Paul Turner (Senior Environmental Health Officer at North Yorkshire Council), Richard Sprenger (Chairman of Highfield) and Stuart Wiggans (Operations Director for Shield Safety).
The panel will discuss third-party audits and why they are crucial in the food industry to ensure that food products are safe, of good quality and comply with regulations and standards. Whether you are based in the UK or abroad, you will certainly learn about the value of these schemes in improving food safety.
Jo Betts started working as an EHO in 1992 and since then has worked at several local authorities across the Midlands, including districts and cities.
Jo set up a consultancy service in 2015, after taking voluntary redundancy as a Head of Service. She has worked with several large businesses, including Home Bargains and Greggs, and continues to provide consultancy support for local authorities.
Jo is currently employed by South Derbyshire DC as their Principal EHO and has responsibility for Olio and Chilled Pubs Primary Authority Partnerships. She is also an active member of the Primary Authority Sector Panel for Hospitality.
Following a career as a managing director of a successful food, health and safety consultancy, Dr Lisa Ackerley now works as Director of Public Health and Hygiene Engagement at Reckitt, home of the world's best-loved and trusted hygiene, health and nutrition brands.
Lisa is an expert in the commercial food safety arena, working as an expert witness for food law and practice, and is regularly called upon to comment on public hygiene issues in the media. She has appeared on prime-time consumer TV shows in addition to many radio shows as a trusted voice.
More recently, Lisa became Adviser to UK Hospitality working on food safety regulatory affairs.
Paul Turner is currently a Senior Environmental Health Officer with the newly formed North Yorkshire Council. Previously he was with Ryedale District Council and before that Hull City Council. He first started his career in environmental health in the late 1980s.
Recent work with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has seen Paul as a Local Authority member of the working group looking at the modernisation of the Food Hygiene Delivery Model (and the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme - FHRS). He’s also been working with the FSA on their Register a Food Business (RAFB) service.
Paul has experience in many areas of food hygiene inspection and regulation and was an investigating officer in one strand of the Horsemeat scandal.
Stuart Wiggans has worked in the field of environmental health for over thirty years. His career started at Tameside Council in Greater Manchester, where he worked as a Commercial Environmental Health Practitioner (EHP) dealing with health and safety, food safety, public health and environmental protection.
He currently works for Shield Safety as an Operations Director. His responsibilities cover a number of operational areas of the business, including audit, safety consultancy, fire safety, safety advice line, training, operational service and quality management.
Prior to this role, Stuart spent the majority of his career working in the retail sector with both Tesco and Asda (part of the Walmart group) and has led global teams and global projects while living abroad. He also worked in a veterinary consultancy with both public and private sector clients.
Following the panel discussion, there will be a short break and plenty of time for a live Q&A conducted by the Improving Food Safety webinar series host, Sterling Crew (President of the Institute of Food Science and Technology.)
